Coverage Types
Other Structures
Definition
Other Structures coverage (Coverage B on a standard homeowners policy) protects detached structures on the insured's property that are not the primary dwelling — such as detached garages, sheds, fences, gazebos, and guest houses. It is typically set at 10% of the dwelling coverage limit (Coverage A), though this can be adjusted by endorsement. The structure must be separated from the main dwelling by clear space or connected only by a fence, utility line, or similar connection.
In Zach’s Words
“Your homeowners policy doesn't just cover the house itself — it also covers the other stuff on your property. Detached garage? Covered. Backyard shed? Covered. Fence, gazebo, even a detached guest house? All covered under Other Structures, which is usually set at 10% of your dwelling limit. So if your home is insured for $800K, you'd typically have $80K for other structures. If you've got a really nice detached ADU or guest house, you might want to bump that percentage up — but for most people, the default works fine.”
