Flood Insurance

Definition

Insurance coverage that protects against property damage caused by flooding. Standard homeowners and commercial property policies exclude flood damage, requiring a separate policy through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or private insurers.

Growing Up Covered

In Zach’s Words

Like earthquakes, floods are NOT covered by your regular homeowners policy. Even an inch of water can cause tens of thousands in damage. If you're in a flood zone, your lender probably requires it. But even if you're not in a flood zone, it might be worth having — about 25% of flood claims come from low-risk areas.
